Course Descriptions
EML 050. Listening and Speaking for Multilingual Learners I. 3 Credit Hours.
Listening and Speaking for Multilingual Learners I is designed for non-native speakers of English who need to develop listening and speaking skills to prepare for college-level courses. Students improve their ability to communicate and be understood, gain familiarity with phonemes, word stress, intonation patterns, articulation, and vowel sounds in English, and use these skills in discussions, short talks, and presentations. In addition, students listen to short spoken passages from a variety of disciplines, speeches, and short talks with an emphasis on beginning note-taking strategies and techniques as well as models for spoken English.
Prerequisites: Recommendation of ESL/EML faculty
EML 051. English Grammar for Multilingual Learners I. 3 Credit Hours.
English Grammar for Multilingual Learners I provides students with a review of basic English grammar rules and structures, with attention given to word order, sentence boundaries, and verb tenses, including their form, meaning, and use. Students learn and apply these rules through speaking, writing, and other relevant activities.
Prerequisites: Recommendation of ESL/EML faculty or concurrent or prior enrollment in EML 050 with a minimum grade of "C"
EML 052. Reading and Writing for Multilingual Learners of English I. 6 Credit Hours.
Reading and Writing for Multilingual Learners of English I is for non-native speakers of English who need to develop the academic English language skills necessary for success in college-level courses. Instruction in the course promotes a focus on introducing and developing English language competence in college-level academic reading, writing, and vocabulary.
Prerequisites: Recommendation of ESL/EML faculty or concurrent or prior enrollment in EML 051 with a minimum grade of "C"
EML 060. Listening and Speaking for Multilingual Learners II. 3 Credit Hours.
Listening and Speaking for Multilingual Learners II provides language learners with an opportunity to focus on listening and note-taking skills in the college classroom. The class focuses on vocabulary acquisition, listening to lectures, classroom discussion strategies, oral presentations, and exposure to college content from a variety of disciplines.
Prerequisites: Recommendation of ESL/EML faculty or EML 052 with a minimum grade of "C"
EML 061. English Grammar for Multilingual Learners II. 3 Credit Hours.
English Grammar for Multilingual Learners II provides language learners with a review of English grammar, including verbs and sentence structure. Special attention is given to the clauses and sentence types found in academic English and required in college-level writing.
Prerequisites: Recommendation of ESL/EML faculty or concurrent or prior enrollment in EML 060 with a minimum grade of "C"
EML 062. Reading and Writing for Multilingual Learners of English II. 6 Credit Hours.
Reading and Writing for Multilingual Learners of English II is designed for English learners who have demonstrated general fluency in reading and writing English and need to develop clarity in using English for academic purposes. The course prepares students to conduct themed database research, research writing, article reading, and summary writing.
Prerequisites: Recommendation of ESL/EML faculty or concurrent or prior enrollment in EML 061 with a minimum grade of "C"
EML 071. English Grammar for Multilingual Learners III. 3 Credit Hours.
English Grammar for Multilingual Learners III improves the grammatical accuracy in learners' written English. The course provides students with intensive reinforcement and practice of structures taught in previous grammar courses. Students apply accurate grammar in their own essays by implementing editing strategies.
Prerequisites: Recommendation of ESL/EML faculty or EML 062 with a minimum grade of "C"
EML 072. Reading and Writing for Multilingual Learners of English III. 3 Credit Hours.
Reading and Writing for Multilingual Learners of English III facilitates English learners' performance in college-level courses. The class focuses on improving reading comprehension and grammatical and lexical accuracy in a variety of writing tasks. This course prepares students to improve the speed and accuracy of academic writing, as well as the sophistication of grammar structures and vocabulary.
Prerequisites: Recommendation of ESL/EML faculty or concurrent or prior enrollment in EML 071 with a minimum grade of "C"
EML 073. Composition Support for Multilingual Learners of English. 3 Credit Hours.
Composition Support for Multilingual Learners of English supports English learners' performance in College Composition I. The course focuses on improving the speed and accuracy of academic writing, as well as the sophistication of grammar structures and vocabulary.
Prerequisites: Recommendation of ESL/EML faculty or concurrent or prior enrollment in EML 071 with a minimum grade of "C"
